Moldova will receive next month 3.15 million Euro from the European Union to overcome the drought effects which severely affected the Republic of Moldova during the summer. The farmers will be the main beneficiaries of the financial aid submitted by the EU, said Kristalina Georgieva, EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection.<\/p>\n

“No country can prepare alone for all disaster risks. We need to cooperate for better response,” the official said on her Twitter page during her current visit to Moldova. Mrs. Georgieva held meetings today with Moldovan Premier Vlad Filat and Moldovan Minister of Interior Dorin Recean.<\/p>\n

The Emergency Situations Service of Moldova and the European Commission recently signed an Administrative Arrangement on cooperation in civil protection. Over the next two years, it implies participation in joint training sessions and workshops on civil protection and the sharing of experience on disaster response.<\/p>\n

“Disasters are multiplying in number and severity. No country can cope with the growing risks by itself and cooperation is the most efficient and cost-effective way to protect our citizens and avoid large-scale damage. As closely cooperating neighbors, the European Union and Moldova have already made the first joint steps in disaster prevention and response,” EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said.<\/p>\n

The official also emphasized that the bilateral relations between Moldova and the European Union are at their highest level now.<\/p>\n

“[It is] great to be in Chisinau at a time when EU-Moldova relations have never been better.”<\/p>\n

Some 11.7% of Moldova’s fertile territory was severely affected by drought this year and part of the harvest was compromised.<\/p>\n
