Russia asks Moldova to give up any further negotiations on energy supplies with the European Union in exchange for a discount in prices on natural gas. According to Gazeta.ru, Moldova wants a reduction by 30%.<\/p>\n

“Russia proposes that Moldova must first denounce the protocol on its entry in the EU’s Energy Community,” Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novac said.<\/p>\n

Early in 2013 Moldova plans on building a new natural gas project. The Government wants to construct a joint pipeline with Romania which is meant to supply alternative resources of gas from the European Union.<\/p>\n

In a visit to Moscow which ended today, Moldovan Premier Vlad Filat presented his country’s needs in terms of energy resources. No agreements were signed and the conclusions are still unknown, although the Prime Minister promised to give more information about the negotiations after they will be concluded.<\/p>\n

The experts believe that Moldova would save nearly $400 million a year if a discount would be offered, but this “would cost Moldova their sovereignty.”<\/p>\n

Moldova fully relies on Russia’s Gazprom gas supplies. The natural gas price for Moldova is currently the same as for any other EU member state. According to the Russian officials, Moldova has debt to cover which amounts $4.1 billion for its breakaway region of Transnistria.
