The European Commission is currently investigating potential anticompetitive practices in Russia’s supply of natural gas in Central and Eastern European countries. The investigation focuses on Gazprom natural gas producer and supplier.<\/p>\n

“The Commission has concerns that Gazprom may be abusing its dominant market position in upstream gas supply markets in Central and Eastern European Member States, in breach of Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,” the Commission informs in a press release.<\/p>\n

The European institution suspects Gazprom of exclusionary behavior in terms of obstacles to supply diversification, barriers to network access and possible imposing excessive prices.<\/p>\n

“Such behavior, if established, may constitute a restriction of competition and lead to higher prices and deterioration of security of supply. Ultimately, such behavior would harm EU consumers,” the EU Commission reported.<\/p>\n

Gazprom has already been informed in regard with the ongoing investigation developed by the European Union and the competition authorities of the Member States. However, it is unknown the duration of this antitrust investigation which strongly depends on its complexity.<\/p>\n

The Russian concern supplies a large quantity of natural gas to the Eastern European countries such as Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and others. The Unified Gas Supply System of Russia includes 164.7 thousand km of gas trunk lines and branches.<\/p>\n

Christian Egenhofer, the head of the energy program at the Centre for European Policy Studies told The Wall Street Journal that such a move might threaten the relations between the EU and Russia.<\/p>\n

"This will have a negative impact on the EU-Russia relationship but there is no credible alternative to the two sides trading in natural gas. Russia is still the world’s largest supplier of natural gas," Mr. Egenhofer said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
