Moldova is obliged to pay a $6 million debt for electric power to the Ukrainian energy provider Energoalians. The debt has been accumulated since 1991, Infotag news agency reports.<\/p>\n

“Energoalians demanded that Moldelectrica should pay 60 million US$ in debts, explaining this by the fact that Moldova was short in the payment of 20 million US$ for the electric power supplied in 1998. With the subsequent penalizations and fines, this amount increased three-fold,” Infotag reports.<\/p>\n

According to the source, the Moldovan electric power supplier Moldelectrica refused to ascertain the debt. As a result of the conflict, the Ukrainian state enforcement service arrested a part of power transmission line in southern Moldova.<\/p>\n

"Ukrainian businessman Rinat Akhmetov might be interested in the arrest of the Moldovan key power transmission line. His company, Power Trade, is one of the main electric power suppliers in Moldova," the Ukrainian press recently wrote.<\/p>\n

Vadim Ciobanu, the head of the energy efficiency department within the Ministry of Economy told Infotag that the conflict between the sides lasts for several years.<\/p>\n

"However, at the last sitting of the Ukrainian court, we discussed only a part of this amount, of 6 million dollars. On this very case, the court arrested a segment of a high-voltage power line of the Moldovan state regional power plant Vulcanesti, crossing the Odessa region," the official said.<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Ciobanu, the Ministry of Finances appealed against this decision of the Ukrainian court. The next debate on this case will take place in September.
