Moldova still lacks a new gas-supply partnership with Russia’s Gazprom provider. Moldovan Deputy Premier, Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar told Infotag news agency that the delay in signing a new contract is not convenient for Moldova. According to him, Transnistria would consume more gas imported from Russia and the debt would increase.<\/p>\n

“The more we postpone this process, the more debts for the delivered and consumed gas in Transnistria. It is our interest to speed up this process,” Valeriu Lazar said in an interview.<\/p>\n

In 2010 Moldova’s debt to the Russian gas supplier summed up $2.2 billion, while in 2011 – $2.9 billion. The huge debt is caused by Moldova’s separatist region of Transnistria which did not pay for the gas consumed.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan side is hopeful to get better gas supply conditions after signing a new contract with the Russian side.<\/p>\n

“We hope to get better gas supply conditions in the new contract, in terms of prices and payments. We are not interested in delaying this process. Yet, unfortunately, this fact does not depend only on us,” the Ministry said.
