Romania’s capital of Bucharest is making a big move. As of March 25 all the flights which were scheduled to depart from Baneasa (Aurel Vlaicu) Airport will now fly from Otopeni (Henri Coanda) International Airport.<\/p>\n

The switch is intended to develop Aurel Vlaicu airport in a city airport for VIP flights. Until now, only low-cost flights were operated from Baneasa Airport. Many Romanians choose to fly low-cost to many European destinations. Otopeni International Airport operates only regular flights, but from March 25 all the flights which are supposed to land on Baneasa will be diverted to Otopeni.<\/p>\n

Low-cost airlines Blueair, Wizzair and Germanwings will have to raise the fares because the new ‘host’ airport charges more for operating flights.<\/p>\n

Wizzair raised the prices twice for the flights which will be operated after March 25, despite of the fact that the low-cost providers have previously announced only a 4% increase of the price.<\/p>\n

Blueair says on its website that the company switches to Otopeni in order to improve the quality of the services.<\/p>\n

“Wishing to improve our services and offer extra comfort to our passengers, Blue Air decided to move the operations on Henri Coanda International Airport (Otopeni) beginning with March 25th, 2012,” informs Blueair.<\/p>\n

With a daily flux of about 14,000 passengers, Otopeni Airport is already prepared to welcome other 6,600 passengers of Baneasa Airport. According to Blueair, the schedule of their flights will not be affected by the change.<\/p>\n

A new terminal was built and opened at Otopeni in March last year. After March 25, Otopeni will become the only Romanian airport to provide a 24\/24 h services.<\/p>\n

“The regular airlines will not lower the fares, but will hit the low-cost companies by special offers which will sneak the ‘low-cost passengers’. The low-cost airlines will have to give up a big part of their earnings in order to keep up with this unfair competition,” said an expert in aviation, cited by Ziarul Financiar.<\/p>\n

The shops of Otopeni Airport might double their earnings due to higher number of passengers.
