The official reserve assets amounted to 1.793 billion dollars on 18 March 2011, getting close to a historical record high of 1.803.9 billion dollars, recorded on 30 September 2008.<\/p>\n

The National Bank of Moldova (BNM) has said that the currency reserves have increased by almost 50 million dollars since early 2011. About three fourths of the BNM s currency reserves are kept in stocks and shares.<\/p>\n

The increase took place against a background of consolidation of foreign currencies to the US dollar and of increase in net receipts afferent to the mandatory foreign currency reserves of the licenced banks and in revenues from currency reserves’ management and other incomes.<\/p>\n

In 2010, the official reserve assets hiked by 237.4 million dollars, reaching 1.717.69 billion dollars in late December and exceeding the authorities’ and analysts’ expectations.<\/p>\n

The historical threshold of one billion dollars in official reserve assets was crossed in 2007, and the historical record high was recorded in September 2008, when the reserves exceeded 1.800 billion dollars. The central bank’s subsequent massive intervention on the market in order to weaken the Moldovan leu led to a considerable cut in currency reserves, which dropped below 1.2 billion dollars in August 2009.<\/p>\n
