\nThe implementation of a reform in the irrigation sector, seen in the Compact programme was started today in Moldova. The US government allotted a 262-million-dollar grant to this end. In line with the agreement signed in Washington on 22 January 2010, the Moldova Millennium Challenge Fund will restore six irrigation systems on the Dniester river, five on the Prut river and will repair a 93-kilometer-long segment of the Sarateni-Solcani highway via Soroca.<\/p>\n

A representative of the US Embassy, Marcus Michelli, said in his speech:"We would not have reached this point have it not been for the support of Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the ministers that represent the Alliance for European Integration at the Fund’s management board." Marcus Michelli quoted the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as saying at the ceremony of signing the agreement that "the Compact programme of the Millennium Challenge Corporation is a proof of Moldova’s progress in promoting transparent government, observance of human rights and economic reforms."<\/p>\n

The launch of the reform in the irrigation sector took place in Chisinau at a conference attended by governmental representatives, representatives of the public administrations of the settlements where the project is to be carried out, donors and representatives of the implementation bodies.<\/p>\n

The restoration of the central irrigation systems will be carried out on farmlands in the settlements Chircani-Zirnesti, Blindesti, Grozesti, Leova and Cahul located on the banks of the Prut river, as well as in the villages of Jora de Jos, Lopatna, Cosnita, Criuleni, Puhaceni and Roscani situated on the banks of the Dniester river.<\/p>\n

The Moldova Millennium Challenge Fund estimates that over 125,000 Moldovans will benefit from this project. The restorations of road infrastructure will facilitate the movement of over 270,000 citizens. The authors of the project believe that the improved irrigation will make it possible for farmers to obtain high quality grains and the repaired roads will facilitate their access to sales markets.<\/p>\n
