The Republic of Moldova will take over the chairmanship of the Energy Community (EC) in 2011. A decision in this respect was made on 24 September during the eighth meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Energy Community of South East Europe held in Skopje, Macedonia. Moldova was represented at the event by Deputy Premier, Economics Minister Valeriu Lazar.<\/p>\n

At a today’s news conference, Valeriu Lazar pointed out the importance of the above-mentioned meeting for Moldova. By taking over the chairmanship of the Energy Community, "Moldova will commit to further continue the trend of positive development in the organization", he said.<\/p>\n

Valeriu Lazar said that in 2011, the EC will focus its activity on the following priorities: developing a common framework for promoting investments in the modernization of energy infrastructure and, ensuring energy efficiency, carrying out a survey on the oil dimension of the EC, enhancing social dialogue, etc.<\/p>\n

Lazar said that two investment projects had been included on the EC working agenda, one on the construction of an inter-connection power line between Moldova and Romania, Balti-Suceava. The other project sees the construction of a 36-kilometer-long Ungheni-Iasi gas pipeline between the national gas supply systems of the two countries.<\/p>\n

The cost of the first project amounts to 57 million euros, with 28 million euros for Moldova. The second project is estimated at 19 million euros, with 7 million euros due to be granted. "The implementation of these investment projects is included in the Plan for the development of the European transport networks and in the Cross-border Programme. Their implementation will be also discussed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and by the European Investment Bank. These projects are already part of the financing plans of the banks," Lazar pointed out.<\/p>\n
