Prime Minister Vlad Filat and the president of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Philippe Maystadt, signed a 10-million-euro agreement on the rehabilitation and extension of the Moldovan healthcare system and water supply system, the government’s communications and media relations department has said.<\/p>\n

According to the agreement, the project will benefit six towns (Ceadir-Lunga, Floresti, Hincesti, Leova, Orhei and Soroca) and several villages (about 200,000 inhabitants in all). The project aims at providing quality drinking water to the population, by adequately collecting and treating water. It will enhance people’s access to drinking water and will contribute to the reduction of pollution in the region.<\/p>\n

Philippe Maystadt said that this project was welcomed because besides the fact that it would enhance people’s lives, it would also contribute to a better protection of the environment.<\/p>\n

For his part, Vlad Filat praised the support of the European Investment Bank, mentioning that the supply of drinking water to the population was one of the government’s priorities.<\/p>\n

"Step by step, including with the help of our friends and partners, we will provide all the population with quality water and modern hygienic conditions. It is one of the government’s goals and we will do our utmost to fulfill it," Filat said, mentioning that the project would be carefully implemented.<\/p>\n

The project is co-financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and by the European Commission, within the framework of the Neighbourhood Investment Facility.<\/p>\n

This is the EIB’s third loan to Moldova. The European Investment Bank earmarked 30 million euros for road restoration and 20 million dollars for enhancing the capacities of the Chisinau International Airport.<\/p>\n

Vlad Filat and Philippe Maystadt also discussed the EIB and the EBRD willingness to allot 50 million euros for the wine-making and wine-growing sector. This project had been already approved, the final decision due to be taken in November.<\/p>\n

In the context, Philippe Maystadt said that he had received a letter on behalf of the Moldovan premier, asking for additional financing of 75 million dollars for the restoration of Moldovan roads. Talks on the matter will be held in November within the EIB board.<\/p>\n
