Prime Minister Vlad Filat today said that the damages inflicted by floods are preliminarily estimated at 65 million dollars. The prime minister made this statement at a ceremony of providing a consignment of US humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n

Filat said that "a preliminary report shows the amount of losses, as well as the importance of the assistance which we receive." "Moldova witnesses unprecedented openness and has true friends," the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

US Ambassador to Moldova Asif Chaudhry said that the help conveyed to the Service of Civil Protection and Emergencies today is the third installment of assistance which the United States gives to alleviate the floods’ impact. Last July, the USA donated aid worth over 300,000 dollars, which consisted of money and medicines, beds, boats. "We are here for Moldova’s people, and the USA will always help you with necessary things in emergency situations," Asif Chaudhry said.<\/p>\n

The head of the Service of Civil Protection and Emergencies, Mihai Harabagiu, told journalists that 100 employees of the service still work in flood-hit villages from Cantemir district and another 60 in Cahul district, southern Moldova. They help the residents pump water out of cellars and basements. On 12 August, access to the worst hit village of Cotul Morii was allowed.<\/p>\n

The official said that employees of the Construction and Regional Development Ministry started coming on the spot to begin the construction of houses for flood victims. The government is to build 701 houses. Mihail Harabagiu expressed confidence that those who lost their dwellings in the wake of floods will enter their new houses next October.
