The participants laid the emphasis on gender equity issues, the government&#8217;s press service has said.<\/p>\n<p>Moldova&#8217;s delegation, headed by State Minister Victor Bodiu, comprised Deputy Labour, Social Protection and Family Minister Vadim Pistrinciuc, Moldovan prime minister&#8217;s adviser Stela Mocan, chief advisor on strategic planning Onorica Banciu, the chairwoman of the organization Gender Centre, Valentina Bodrug-Lungu, and a representative of the National Copuncil of Participation, Antonita Fonari.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia&#8217;s permanent representative to the UN, ECOSOC chairman, Ambassador Hamidon Ali, opened the meeting to announce the concept, objective and primary subjects of the session. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon delivered an opening speech, calling on the member states to invest more in the advancement of women and to back the adoption by the UN of a comprehensive action plan for the health of women and children.<\/p>\n<p>In his speech, Victor Bodiu pointed out the progress in the implementation of MDG, as well as the sectors that need enhanced attention at the national level. Referring to the government&#8217;s achievements, Bodiu listed the measures taken to reduce poverty, in particular to support people affected by poverty through social assistance and information campaigns about minimal guaranteed subsidies for less well-off people.<\/p>\n<p>The state minister also talked about the government&#8217;s intention to introduce MDG in the national development policies more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>The gender problem in Moldova was approached through the light of the accepted international development goals. The minister mentioned the implementation of national programmes aimed at stepping up women&#8217;s status, such as the action programme of gender equality and the action plan for its implementation in 2010-13.<\/p>\n<p>Bodiu said that Moldova still faces such social problems as human trafficking, family violence, extension and improvement of quality of the education, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The minister also talked about the global economic crisis which had a short-term negative impact on Moldova&#8217;s economy, including on the MDG indexes. At the same time, he said that the crisis fostered the economic reform, partnerships and internal mobilization for the creation of a more solid and viable economic system.<\/p>\n<p>Bodiu said that the government would mobilize internal recources necessary to ensure the adequate implementation of reforms that are not covered by international financing problems.<\/p>\n<p>In line with the ECOSOC programme, the three &quot;friends&quot; of Moldova&#8217;s national voluntary presentation, Azerbaijan, Romania and the USA, intervened.<\/p>\n<p>Azerbaijan&#8217;s representative Asif Garayev pointed out the similitude of problems the two countries were facing in the implementation of MDG and of the national development policies. Garayev pointed out the need to step up regional partnership and mobilize financial sources to encourage the initiatives promoted by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Romania&#8217;s Permanent Representative to the UN Simona Mirela Miculescu welcomed the government&#8217;s commitment to advance towards the implementation of MDG and to include them in the national development policies.<\/p>\n<p>US Ambassador to ECOSOC Rick Barton described Moldova&#8217;s report as one of the most sincere, realistic and balanced. He welcomed the government&#8217;s efforts to ensure Moldova&#8217;s development in conditions of pressure and expressed the US Government&#8217;s support for efforts to carry out political and legislative reforms in order to ensure women&#8217;s status.<\/p>\n<p>UN resident Coordinator in Moldova Kaarina Immonen said that the government confirmed its commitments by adopting laws, programmes and action plans.
