The International Monetary Fund shall be backing Moldova as long as its authorities conduct reforms, Nikolai Georgiev, head of the IMF assessment mission, stated during his meeting with Moldova’s Acting President, Parliament Chairman Mihai Ghimpu here on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Ghimpu said that despite the continuing world crisis, which certainly affected Moldova as well, one can observe signs of improvements in the national economy thank to the reforms being implemented by the governing Alliance for European Integration.<\/p>\n

The acting president said Moldova has already met a number of its commitments within the new program of cooperation with the IMF, and will proceed with the realization of agreed-on tasks.<\/p>\n

Nikolai Georgiev said that during its two-week-long work in Chisinau, the IMF mission will analyze the country’s economic achievements and progress in carrying out the Program, will update its macro-economic assessments, and will discuss with the government the actions to be taken in the subsequent period.<\/p>\n

On January 29, 2001 the Republic of Moldova embarked on a new three-year Program of cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, which stipulates that Moldova will receive a US$574.4 million credit (of this sum, US$90 million has already come) payable in 10 years with a 5-year grace period in payments.
