At the end of April the deposit portfolio of commercial banks constituted 25.21 billion lei that is by 1.97 billion lei (-7.27%) less than by the beginning of 2009. <\/p>\n

Such are the data by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM). The NBM’s report shows that the commercial banks’ assets decreased to a lesser extent (-1.69 billion lei) and in a slower tempo (- 4.31%) and constituted 37.43 billion lei, but they increased by 7.55% against April 2008. <\/p>\n

The aggregate authorized capital increased by 0. 49% and the banks’ liabilities decreased by 5.42%. In banking sector employees’ opinion, the banks’ liabilities decreased at the cost of the decrease in the crediting volume by 3.84%. <\/p>\n

Bankers consider when the volume of crediting the national economy increases, the outflow of deposits from bank accounts will stop. They stress the fact that juridical persons are responsible for one third of losses in the banks’ deposit portfolios, as under the crisis conditions the activity of business people decreased, as well as their profits on the accounts; and when the national economy revives, proceeds from enterprises and from physical persons, who will return to the banks, will come to the banks again, as soon as they receive stable salaries. <\/p>\n

‘The recover of the national economy and the stabilization of the situation in the banking system is a long process and, if the NBM begins granting targeted credits already tomorrow, the improvement of the situation will be felt only in three-four months’, one of the bankers said.
