The world financial crisis risks turning into an economic crisis and its effects in Moldova are yet to be felt if immediate measures are not taken. The statement was made by economist Veaceslav Negruta at the meeting of the Economic Press Club on November 24. <\/p>\n

“The world crisis is a problem that must be addressed in Moldova as well even if we are not so active on the world markets,” the economist said.

\nHe said that the job cuts in Europe including Russia will force more and more Moldovans to return home. Consequently, remittances will decrease. “Moldova will suffer the consequences if no measures are taken,” he said. <\/p>\n

The IMF Resident Representative in Moldova Johan Mathisen said that the impact of the crisis on the Moldovan baking sector was not severe, but the other sectors of the economy were more seriously affected than projected. According to Mathisen, the effects of the crisis on the financial sector of Moldova will be felt quicker, while on the real sector gradually. <\/p>\n

Mathisen also said that the IMF forecasts were mistaken as the economies are expected to recover in 2010 not in 2009.
