Moldcell company demonstrated on Wednesday that it is technically ready to provide 3G (third generation) mobile telephony services in Moldova. <\/p>\n

In a public presentation, the mobile telephony operator demonstrated in practice the possibilities of 3G telephony. It covered a video call through two cell phones and downloading of a file from the internet. <\/p>\n

Director General of Moldcell, Yusuf Baykan, stated that the company already has technical possibilities to provide 3G mobile telephony services on the Moldovan market. As we are technically ready to provide the solutions we have demonstrated today, once we obtain the license, the company will proceed to the implementation of the actions plan and will gradually provide a wider coverage with 3G, said Moldcell top manager. <\/p>\n

Asked to specify the launch date for 3G services, Yusuf Baykan stated that it will produce by the end of this year. At the same time, he said that to start with 3G services will be made available in big cities, and gradually the coverage area will be expanded to the entire territory of Moldova. <\/p>\n

We remind that during its sitting on Wednesday, May 21, the Government decided to provide by the end of this year four licenses for the provision of 3G mobile telephony services in Moldova. The licenses will be provided for a period of 15 years. The fee for a license will be of 8 mln USD. <\/p>\n

According to the decision approved by the Executive, the current operators on the Moldovan mobile telephony market will be able to buy such licenses without a tender. At the same time, the paper provides for the licenses that will not be reclaimed by the end of this year to be provided based on a tender in year 2009. <\/p>\n

Following the issuance of this decision, Moldcell stated that it supports Government’s decision to issue such licenses, but hesitates to make public its final decision on buying one until it is informed on the conditions of such a license. <\/p>\n

In December 2004, Moldcell launched the rapid data transfer technology GPRS, and in June 2005 it proposed its subscribers EDGE or accelerated GPRS service. <\/p>\n

The 3G technology allows for a higher data transfer speed (7 Mbps) in comparison with the current standards of the mobile telephony and even with the internet through ADSL fixed network. The 3G incorporates the video call, data transfer, copy and storage, etc services. <\/p>\n

At present, there are three mobile telephony operators in Moldova working in the GSM standard (Orange, Moldcell and Eventis), and another operator (Unite) in the CDMA standard.
