It is rather improbable that the inflation this year will remain under 10%. This objective can be achieved only if the prices during the next few months decrease continuously. <\/p>\n

Such a statement was made by the head of the IMF mission Graeme Justice, who has been in Chisinau on a visit between May 7 and 21. <\/p>\n

At a news conference on May 20, Justice said that the objective of single-digit inflation can be achieved only if the harvest this year is very good. <\/p>\n

The IMF representatives said that the rising prices remain one of the greatest concerns. “As in the neighboring states, the food prices and the prices of the energy products in Moldova have increased and affected most of the population,” the IMF official said. According to him, the situation in Moldova is more difficult owing to the foreign shocks faced last year (the drought and crisis in the winemaking sector) and to the rising oil prices on the world markets. <\/p>\n

The official said that the central bank is taking appropriate measures to curb inflation, stressing that the Government and the National Bank should take very prudent steps if they want to bring down inflation. Justice underlined that only a state with a very good monetary policy can control inflation. <\/p>\n

At the same time, the IMF official said that Moldova made progress this year and the economic growth can be 6-7% or even higher.
