Piracy of software on personal computers (PC) in the Republic of Moldova fell by 2 percentage points from 2006 to 2007, amid a global trend in which piracy rates dropped in most countries. Industry losses due to software piracy in the Republic of Moldova fell to 43 million USD in 2007. <\/p>\n

These are among the findings of the fifth annual global PC software piracy study released today by the Business Software Alliance (BSA), an international association representing the global software industry. The study covers 108 countries and was conducted independently by IDC, the information technology (IT) industry’s leading global market research and forecasting firm. <\/p>\n

“This report shows that have more work to do in the Republic of Moldova in the battle against software piracy,” said Oleg Efrim, advocate, BSA Representative in Moldova. “Continuation of the total piracy decrease will bring about significant benefits for consumers, local companies from the software products and services area as well as for small businesses and Moldavian society in general; decrease of the software piracy rate only by 2% became one of the key factors that have positively effected on the decrease of the total software piracy losses”. <\/p>\n

During the previous 2 years software piracy rate in the Republic of Moldova has decreased from 96% up to 92%. BSA Moldova together with its partners from the state authorities have fighter against the software piracy by means of informational campaigns having its purposes in increasing of the level of knowledge and perception of the intellectual property values. <\/p>\n

Among the 108 countries studied, PC software piracy dropped in sixty-seven countries, and increased in only eight. However, because the worldwide PC market grew fastest in high-piracy countries, the worldwide piracy rate increased by three percentage points to 38% in 2007. In the Central and Eastern Europe, the highest-piracy countries were: Armenia (93%), Azerbaidjan (92%) and Moldova (92%). Among the lowest-piracy countries were: Czech Republic (39%), Hungary (42%) and Slovakia (45%). <\/p>\n

The BSA-IDC Global Software Piracy Study covers piracy of all packaged software that runs on personal computers, including desktops, laptops, and ultra-portables. The study does not include other types of software such as server- or mainframe-based software.
