The number of bank cards in circulation in Moldova reduced by 80.37 thousand during the first quarter of this year against the end of 2007 and counted 691.86 thousand, according to the latest data of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM). <\/p>\n

The negative trend was determined by the growing number of cards withdrawn from circulation. Thus, during the first there months of this year over 157,000 cards were taken out of circulation as compared to only 31,000 in the same period of the previous year. At the same time the banks issued only 77,000 cards. <\/p>\n

Although during the first quarter of 2008 the number of cards dropped, the number of card operations increased by almost 30% compared with the similar period of last year, and Moldovan citizens spent more by means of card transactions. <\/p>\n

According to NBM, in January-March 2008, the value of operations with cards issued by the local banks on the territory of Moldova increased by almost 1.5 times compared with the same period of the last year and exceeded 2.42 bn lei (equivalent of 230 mln USD). <\/p>\n

Moldovan card holders spent more money abroad too. The number of operations increased and exceeded 58,000 against 43,000 in the first quarter of 2007, and the absolute value of the operations carried out abroad amounted to almost 161 mln lei (15 mln USD or 9.6 mln EUR). <\/p>\n

During the first quarter of 2008 the value and number of transactions carried out by foreign citizens in Moldova also increases significantly. Thus, the people who visited Moldova spent 316.7 mln lei (29.84 mln USD or 18.85 mln EUR), of which 31% came on cash payments carried out in the trade network or for the provided services. <\/p>\n

In terms of cashless payments, Moldovan citizens continued to be rather sceptical. During the period of reference, Moldovan citizens spent on shopping and services only 43.6 mln lei (4.11 mln USD or 2.6 mln EUR). Although the share of cashless payments increased a little compared with the similar period of 2007 and reached 1.8%. It remained rather small compared with the European average, where such transactions are dominant. At the end of the first quarter of 2008, 13 banking institutions were issuing and\/or accepting bank cards in Moldova, seven banks operated VISA cards, 12 operated MasterCard Worldwide cards, one operated local MoldCardSistem cards and one operated UNICARD cards. \/\/ BASA-Press<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
