Moldova intends to restore its fleet at the cost of investors, credits and grants. It is envisaged by the Concept of the River Transport Development, which came in force on Tuesday.
\nThe Government intends to reanimate the river transport infrastructure, including 23 floating means, belonging to the state. <\/p>\n

The major part of used vessels (28 units) belongs to private persons, who provide passenger conveyances in the Vadu-lui-Voda recreation zone. The state has virtually non-functional freight floating means and ferries, which provide the ford in Soroca and Casauti. <\/p>\n

In experts’ opinion, there are several fleet degradation causes. The main cause lies in the fact that the repair base of vessels remained on the Transnistrian territory, which is currently not controlled by Moldova. The Dniester and the Prut rivers grew shallow and no works for maintaining guaranteed depths are conducted and the rivers are navigable only in some places. As a result, international river conveyances are virtually suspended. <\/p>\n

All in all, in Moldova there is only one seaport (under construction in Giurgiulesti, there are three river ports on the Dniester (in Bender, Rybnitsa, Varnitsa and one on the Prut (Ungheni). <\/p>\n

The Government proposes to restore the fleet step-by-step. The first stage in 2008-2009 envisages preparing the legislative base and restoring the personnel.
