The draft road rehabilitation component under the full assistance Compact Program was discussed at the end of the last week in a meeting of the group of experts chaired by First Deputy Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii, National Coordinator for the development of country proposal. <\/p>\n

Valentin Bozu, leading economist of the Compact Team, told the participants that the draft of this component proposes to rehabilitate the following segments of road: Balti–Criva, Sarateni–Soroca–Unguri, Comrat–Giurgiulesti, and two segments that cross the Transnistrian region: Chisinau–Dubasari–Goieni–border with Ukraine and Chisinau–Gura-Bacului–Tiraspol–border with Ukraine. <\/p>\n

The segments were selected in line with the priorities of the National Development Strategy of Moldova as well as in correlation with the Land Transport Infrastructure Strategy, Valentin Bozu specified. <\/p>\n

\"\"The total length of the roads proposed for rehabilitation under the Compact Programme spreads on more than 545 km, and the estimated costs amount to approximately 250 mln USD. <\/p>\n

The members of the Expert Group analyzed the draft in detail and worded a number of proposals dealing with the calculation of the investment reimbursement rate, estimation of implementation costs, social, gender and environment impact assessment. <\/p>\n

First Deputy Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii appreciated this component as a very important one for the economic development of Moldova saying that it meets the requirements of Millennium Challenge Corporation. <\/p>\n

The draft road component under the Compact Program is to be finalized in short terms and proposed for approval as part of the integral country proposal by the Committee for monitoring the development of the Compact Programme. <\/p>\n

Over the next days, the other components of the country proposal will also be subject to debates within the group of experts. Later, the Compact Programme will be presented to the Millennium Challenge Corporation to initiate the due diligence procedure and its approval. <\/p>\n

Moldova became eligible for the full assistance under the Compact Programme on 8 November 2006. At present, the components of the country proposal are worked out and will be presented to the Corporation. Compact assistance will be provided in the form of grants in fields that play an important role in speeding up economic growth. <\/p>\n
