The fact that Moldova was accepted in the asymmetric trade system is an enormous success and provides an extraordinary chance for the country’s economy, appreciated Premier Tarlev the EC’s preliminary approval of the autonomous trade preferences for Moldova. <\/p>\n

Asked by BASA-press reporter, the premier said that the negotiations for the preferential regime were also stimulated by the embargo against Moldovan wine imports imposed by Russia in 2006. <\/p>\n

If in the private sector local producers conform to the new requirements, the EC decision will serve as an incentive able to produce a jump. "It very much depends on how soon the real sector of the national economy will orient itself", the premier also said. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday, November 14, the European Commission approved autonomous trade preferences for Moldova. This proposal as well as other details regarding the categories of goods included in the asymmetric trade regime (no export customs duties) was sent to the EU Member States for endorsement. <\/p>\n

Moldova has not been officially informed if the EU set out any export quotas so far; however quotas might be set for certain "sensitive" products for the EU market. Moldova proposed that these quotas be introduced gradually over the next five years. An export quota is likely to be set for sugar, though it will not be lower than the sugar excess produced in Moldova. Also, limited export can be established for Moldovan wines as well. <\/p>\n

From 1 January 2006 Moldova enjoyed a GSP+ in its external trade with EU, so that 607 groups of goods of 700 exported by Moldova to the European market fall under the incidence of this system.
