The Association of the Sugar Beet Producers of Moldova are requesting higher state compensations in line with the losses caused by the drought raise up to 200 million lei, so that 60% of the enterprises cultivating beet are on the point of going bankrupt. <\/p>\n

“About 60% of the beet-producing enterprises are finishing the year with losses”, a communique issued on Wednesday by the Association of the Sugar Beet Producers of Moldova (APSZM) shows. <\/p>\n

The problem is as complicated as the sugar beet is one of the main cultures in the North of Moldova, as well as the vineyards for the South, Association President Nicolae Moraru has said. The sugar companies increased the acquisition prices for raw material against 2006 and, additionally, after negotiating with APSZM, it was going to pay additionally to the sugar producers on the account of the 2008 crop. But, the financial situation of most of more agricultural enterprises cannot guarantee yet they can keep the beet areas in 2008 at the same level as in 2007. “Following the current drought, raising the compensations granted by the state to the beet producers makes sense”, up to two thousand lei per a hectare, the Association says. <\/p>\n

The compensations could be granted in tranches, in line with the work process. The beet producers propose the compensations not to be counted by the crop per hectare. <\/p>\n

The Association of the Sugar Beet Producers of Moldova has recently concluded the current drought has compromised half of the harvest, so that they foresee a total harvest of 600-660 tons of sugar beet, against 1.1 million tons in 2006. <\/p>\n

Subsequently, the sugar production can rise to 80 thousand tons, by 69 thousand tons less against 2006. The internal sugar reserves do not exceed four thousand tons.
