New IMF Mission Chief Graeme Justice said on Thursday to the press the economic situation is good, in spite of the external shocks and the drought Moldova had to meet. <\/p>\n

I have pleasantly concluded Moldova will cope remarkably well with the situation. In spite of the shock caused by the wine embargo to Russia, the tariff raise of the energy agents and the drought, in January-June 2007, there was registered an economic increase by eight per cent, Justice said. <\/p>\n

It is clear that the economy moves on and we expect a GDP of six per cent in 2007, the official added and he stressed, Moldova is at the beginning of a transition period which characterized the Eastern Europe countries that are currently EU members. At the same time, for a qualitative growth, comparable with that from the Eastern Europe countries, it must assisted by perseverant actions in promoting structural policies, the IMF chief said. <\/p>\n

In the next two years, he added, we must expect a reduction of the remittances and a significant increase of the foreign investments. <\/p>\n

He appreciated the effort of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) in reducing the inflation and keeping it under ten per cent and expressed his trust this scope will be achieved. <\/p>\n

Referring to the discussions about the budget project for 2008, Justice said the government reiterated its objective to promote a prudent fiscal policy which, together with the NBM’s efforts, will contribute to stopping the inflation process. At the same time, IMF supports the increase of the investment budget expenses, and in this respect, the official opts for the usage of additional receipts obtained to finance the capital investments, namely in infrastructure. <\/p>\n

The IMF European Department Mission which is run by Graeme Justice visited Moldova in September 20-27. Graeme Justice is British. By being named as mission chief for Moldova, he activated as IMF permanent representative in Ukraine and Romania. His last function was that of chief for Montenegro. <\/p>\n
