At its ordinary working meeting held on Wednesday afternoon, the Government of Moldova approved the country’s new Energy Strategy for a period ending in 2020, worked out in conformity with the European energy community requirements. <\/p>\n

Presenting the draft Strategy to the Cabinet, Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Vladimir Antosii said the document is fundamentally aimed at: ensuring the country’s energy security, raising the energy sector efficiency, wider using of renewable energy sources, energy market liberalization; restructuring of the energy complex in the light of requirements to be met with countries seeking integration into the European energy system. <\/p>\n

Realization of these tasks presupposes enhancement of energy collaboration with Ukraine and Romania, accession of the national electricity and gas systems to the Energy Community Treaty and to the Union for Coordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE). <\/p>\n

Measures have been earmarked to improve investment climate in the energy sector, to make Moldova a stronger energy transit country, and to raise the efficiency of energy production, transportation and distribution. <\/p>\n

\"\"According to the Ministry’s calculations, the Energy Strategy implementation will require over \u0432‚¬2 billion, or about \u0432‚¬150 million a year, with a greater part of the means to be invested in the construction of new power plants, high-voltage lines with the neighbor countries, and modernization of existing energy facilities. <\/p>\n

Moldovan experts have already prepared 17 projects of energy sector restructuring and modernization, and Minister Antosii believes investors will definitely show interest to them. Presently, they are in expectation of the Energy Strategy to become an official document, when rules of the game should become clearer and final. The Strategy is yet to be approved by parliament. <\/p>\n
