Moldova will buy 230,000-260,000 tonnes of wheat – 50 percent of its annual consumption after the most disastrous drought over the past 50 years, a Moldovan governmental official told Itar-Tass on Thursday. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the republic’s parliament exempted grain importers from a 5-percent import duty and a 20-percent value added tax to reduce effects of the disaster and compensate for grain price growth on the world markets. But the Cabinet rejected to impose restrictions on grain exports as neighbouring Ukraine did. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, auction prices for grain reserves in the republic soared by 30 percent as against 2006. In a panic people buy flour and cereal in big amounts for future use. <\/p>\n

The authorities pledge there will be no bread price hikes. <\/p>\n

“Bread prices will not grow and we will find the way out of the situation,” the director-general of Moldova’s largest bread-making plant Franzeluta, Yevgeny Baleka, said. <\/p>\n

Franzeluta accounts for almost 80 percent of the republic’s bread products. <\/p>\n

Moldova faced similar situation in 2003, when strong drought killed 75 percent of the republic’s harvest. Russia and other CIS countries provided humanitarian aid to Moldova, but this could not keep prices from growing by 30-60 percent.
