Foreign legal entities and individuals submitted more than 900 trademark registration applications with the State Agency for Intellectual Property Protection (AGEPI) in the first three months of the year, which is three times more than the similar applications submitted by residents of Moldova. <\/p>\n

According to AGEPI, in the first quarter of this year, there have been submitted 1,255 applications of official trademark recognition, of which 962 belong to foreign applicants and only 293 to Moldovan legal entities and individuals. "Moldovan companies have not fully understood the importance of getting trademarks registered", say AGEPI representatives. Besides, some firms do not have available financial resources for this and therefore postpone the registration process. <\/p>\n

The official trademark recognition provides the company with exclusive rights to prevent others to sell similar or identical products under a similar trademark able to create confusion for the public. <\/p>\n

"Many wrongly think that by registering their businesses with the public bodies, the commercial name is automatically protected as a trademark. In Moldova trademarks can be protected only by registration, contrary to other countries where this is done only through their use", experts stress. Using the symbols R, TM or any other equivalents nearby a trademark does not represent an obligation and generally does not provide more legal protection, but rather informs that the mark in question is registered. <\/p>\n

The fee for official trademark recognition varies depending on the type of product. For instance, the registration of a mark under the "alcoholic product" category costs US$490. At the same time, AGEPI provides for 50% discounts for local applicants, individuals and companies with a turnover lower than 8 million euros and a number of employees under 250. <\/p>\n

Moldovan companies have registered by now about 6 thousand trademarks, while the foreign ones present in Moldova, more than 8.3 thousand trademarks.
