Moldovan industry stays with the negative trend, even if in March the downfall was less noticeable then in the previous months of this year. <\/p>\n

The National Statistics Bureau (BNS) announced Tuesday that in the first quarter, the industrial companies of all types of ownership manufactured products worth 5,291.92 million lei (US$410 million) in current prices, i.e. 11.4% down compared to the similar period of 2006. <\/p>\n

In March, the decline accounted for 7.6%, compared to 17.1% in the previous month, which does not inspire a lot of optimism; experts and company managers say that they are not expecting to overcome the crises in the near future. <\/p>\n

Wine exports have not been resumed and winemakers avoid making forecasts on its export unblocking by the Russian Federation given that an official decision delays to be taken. Wine making reduced four times in January-March 2007, and its share reduced to 5.0% of the total industrial production dropping from 25.3% in the same period of the previous year. The vinification decline triggered the reduction of the production per total industry by 13.1%. <\/p>\n

Moreover, production of distilled spirits reduced by 3.5 times (causing the reduction of the industry per total by 3.8%), electricity and heating production and distribution dropped by 10% and caused the reduction of the industry per total by 1.5%. <\/p>\n

Statistics also show a 26% decline in terms of tobacco products manufacture, 8% decline of machines and equipments. <\/p>\n

The growths reported in other fields failed to minimize the decline of production in the above industries. It’s worth mentioning the 2.1 times increase reported by the metallurgic industry, 59% growth of medication and pharmaceutical product industry, and 56% growth of cement, lime and gypsum production. <\/p>\n

Ministry of Economy and Commerce forecasts for 2007 a 9% industrial growth. Moldovan industrial companies produced in 2006 products worth 22 billion 243 million lei (US$1.7 billion), 6.9% down compared to the previous year. It was for the first time in the past six years when industry reported a decline. <\/p>\n

According to the consensus forecast developed by the BusinessIntelligence based on the forecasts of eight experts, the Moldovan industry will report a 3% growth in 2007.
