Moldova climbed two positions up in the top concluded by the American Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal in terms of the economic freedom index and ranks 81 of 157 countries analyzed. <\/p>\n

According to the report on Economic Freedom Index in 2007, Moldovan economy is free in a proportion of 59.5%, the Republic of Moldova ranking in the top immediately after Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Fiji, outrunning Kenya, Turkey, and Sri Lanka. Regionally, the Republic of Moldova ranks 33 of 41 countries. <\/p>\n

Heritage analysts appreciate Moldova’s economic freedom with a score of 59.5%. Moldova is ranked in the category of the "mostly unfree" economies. The report notes that a 0.1 point drop of Moldovan economy’s score in comparison with 2006 can be partially explained by revised calculation methodology. <\/p>\n

Trade freedom, business freedom, and fiscal freedom is strong, state Heritage Foundation experts. In particular, they mention the reduction of corporative tax from 18 to 15%. On the other hand, the reform of the judiciary system and more efficient actions with a view to combat corruption are required. <\/p>\n

The top is concluded based on scores between 0 and 100%, the highest score implying highest degree of freedom. An economy is mostly free, and the government’s interference less, when the index is higher. The Republic of Moldova got low scores in terms of trade policies and foreign investments (30.0%), corruption (29.0%), property rights, finances (50.0%) and more than average scores in terms of monetary policy (68.0%), fiscal freedom (90.4%), freedom from Government (71.7%), business freedom (70.0%), labor freedom (61.2%). Earlier, the Heritage Foundation evaluated the Index of Economy Freedom based on a 1 to 5 points-scale. <\/p>\n

Moldova had an impressive development over 2002-2004: in 2002 it stepped from 120th to 105th position, and then 92nd in 2003; in 2004 it advanced 13 positions more. In 2005, Moldova ranked 77th, and in 2006 it ranked 83rd. The lowest economic freedom index of 4.10%, Moldova had in 1995, when Moldovan economy was appreciated as a repressed one. <\/p>\n

Hong Kong scoring 89.3% is leading in the top; it is followed by Singapore with 85.7%, Australia with 82.7%, USA with 82.0%, and New Zealand with 81.6%. <\/p>\n

Of former soviet republics, currently independent countries, Estonia ranks 12; Lithuania, 22; Armenia, 32; Georgia, 35; Kyrgyzstan, 79; Russian Federation, 120; Ukraine, 125. <\/p>\n
