Moldova’s balance of trade deficit increased by US$141 million in November 2006, and it reached the amount of US$1 billion 434.1 million over 11 months, an amount that exceeds by 36.8% the registered level in the similar period of 2005. <\/p>\n

The National Statistics Bureau (BNS) announced Tuesday that the exports performed in January-November amounted to US$931.9 million, dropping by 5.4% compared to the similar period of 2005, while imports increased by 16.4%, up to the highest value level after the declaration of independence, respectively US$2 billion 366.0 million. <\/p>\n

The significant increase of deficit was determined by the embargo on Moldovan wine imports imposed by the Russian Federation. Deliveries of Moldovan goods and products to the Russian market reduced by 47.3% over 11 months. Consequently, goods exports to the CIS countries "reduced by 23.5% in comparison with the similar period of 2005, contributing with 11.9% to the reduction of the total volume of exports", statisticians note. <\/p>\n

According to BNS, Moldova’s balance of trade deficit with the CIS countries constituted US$510.1 million, 65.6% up compared to January-November 2005; with the EU countries, US$406.4 million, by 9.9% more than last year’s level; with the Central and Eastern European countries, US$197.2 million, 26.6% up. The negative balance of trade with other world countries constituted US$320.4 million, 49.4% up. <\/p>\n

BNS also announced that over 11 months, food products, drinks, and tobacco exports reduced by 31.1%, and unprocessed leather, processed leather, furs and products made of these exports reduced by 67.4%. The very reduction of exports with these categories of goods determined the balance of trade to worsen. <\/p>\n

The degree of covering exports through imports in January-November was of 39.4%, compared to 48.4% in the similar period of 2005. <\/p>\n
