In 2005, 45% of the total trademark registration applications belonged to them; in 2006, however, the winemakers&#8217; share decreased to approximately 25%. <\/p>\n<p>All in all, Moldovan companies have registered around 6 thousand trademarks by now, and the foreign companies present in Moldova registered 8.3 thousand trademarks. At the same time, alte 28 thousand foreign trademarks are protected in Moldova in accordance with the provisions of the Madrid Agreement, which provides for the registration in only one state and protection of the trademark in 70 countries, members of the agreement. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"166\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.moldova.org\/economie\/vinicultura\/vin_1_314x166.jpg\" width=\"314\" align=\"right\" \/>Ion Daniliuc also added that AGEPI and Moldova-Vin will put forward stricter requirements when registering trademarks by wine enterprises, so that the trademarks represent Moldovan winemaking rather than damage its image. Earlier, Valeriu Mironescu stated that &quot;all kinds of wine trademarks containing names of whispers, doctors, etc. that affect the wine-making image&quot; will be excluded from the market. <\/p>\n<p>The state owns around 80 trademarks, including the highly appreciated in the CIS since the soviet period cognac name Barza Alba. In this context, Daniliuc informed that despite the fact that Moldova-Vin was recognized as owner of Barza Alba trademark, it is being used by Ukrainian and Kazakh producers, reason for which Moldova-Vin took an action against them. <\/p>\n<p>Independent experts say that the number of registered trademarks also reduced due to the increased registration fees as of 31 March 2006. The fees for local and foreign companies have been leveled. For instance, the official recognition of a trademark under &quot;alcoholic product&quot; category increased from 1,800 lei to US$490 (6,380 lei). <\/p>\n<p>A trademark is any sign or combination of signs that may be a graphic image and serves as a distinction for similar products or services produced by different individuals\/legal entities. The owner of a registered trademark has an exclusive right to dispose of it, use it and prohibit its unauthorized use.
