MoldovaGaz announced it will shortly ask the National Agency for Energy Regulations to increase the natural gas tariff by 12%, although the import price for gas has increased since the beginning of January 2007 with only 6.2%, from US$160 to US$170 per one thousand cubic meters. <\/p>\n

Ghenadi Abaschin, director of Moldova-Gaz, informed that according to economic analyses, the gas tariff had to be increased by 10%-12% in order to cover the losses in the amount of US$15 million suffered by MoldovaGaz last year as a result of the "inadequate" tariff policy in 2006 and the 2.5-month delay to "rebalance the tariffs" after Gazprom had increased the delivery price. <\/p>\n

At present, houshold consumers with a monthly consumption of up to 30 cubic meters of gas pay 2,196 lei, whereas the consumption exceeding 30 cubic meters is charged with 2,812 lei. Central heating and power plants pay a tariff of 1,745 lei and thermal power stations pay 2,057 lei. <\/p>\n

\"\"On January 4, Abashkin specified in a press conference that the five-year contract signed between MoldovaGaz and Gazprom provides for a supply of 3.6 billion cubic meters of gas at a price of US$170 per one thousand cubic meter in 2007, and deliveries will increase to 3.9 billion cubic meters by year 2011. The parties agreed that in 2008 Moldova will pay for gas 75% of the European average price, i.e. about US$195; in 2009, it will reach 80%, and by 2011, the price will be adjusted to the European average. "Moldova is the first CIS country for which the gas price is calculated based on a clear and transparent formula, in accordance with the market economy requirements", noted director of Moldova-Gaz. <\/p>\n

At the same time, Ghenadi Abaschin stressed that Moldovan Government and Gazprom continue talks over the future cooperation formulas. Theoretically, Moldovan side gave its consent to Gazprom to purchase 14% of shares held by Tiraspol in MoldovaGaz mixed corporation; thus the Russian concern is likely to increase its shareholding to 64%. <\/p>\n
