Chisinau. The European Union, international financial organizations and donor countries will altogether furnish over US$1.2 billion for Moldova in 2007-2009 – a sum equivalent to the country’s State Budget for 2 years. Such was the decision taken on Tuesday by the Consultative Group Meeting of Moldova’s development partners that was held in Brussels and jointly hosted by the European Commission and the World Bank. <\/p>\n

The means concerned will be intended for an efficient realization of the EU-Moldova European Neighborhood Policy Action Plan and of the Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (EGPRSP). <\/p>\n

Speaking at the conclusive news conference in Brussels, Premier Tarlev called the Consultative Group meeting "a historic event for Moldova", stressing that this sum is greater than what all international donor have supplied for Moldova in all the 16 years of its independence. <\/p>\n

Vasile Tarlev said a relationship of friendship and trust has settled between Moldova and the international partners in the spheres of politics and finance. <\/p>\n

According to him, the means in question will be invested first and foremost in projects aimed to enhance reforms of the country’s judiciary, local governance organs, education, public health, infrastructure development, creation of new jobs, rural development through providing long-term credits against minimal interest rates. <\/p>\n

Hugues Mingarelli, the Director for Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus and Central Asiatic Republics from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for External Relations, stated Moldova has deserved the European Union’s trust, and the donors’ assistance should promote consolidation of the stability of the republic standing at the European Union’s door. <\/p>\n

Thomas Richardson, Deputy Division Chief, Northeastern Division (Belarus, Moldova, Norway and Russia) in the IMF’s European Department, remarked Moldova is proceeding with reforms notwithstanding external shocks. To overcome these, the International Monetary Fund is going to build up help for this republic by US$45 million, as per a respective decision, which the IMF leadership will pass by this weekend. <\/p>\n

Paul Bermingham, the World Bank’s Country Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, also highlighted the progress achieved by Moldova in socio-economic reforms implementation. In his words, as the started projects advance, the World Bank assistance for Moldova may be substantially increased. <\/p>\n
