At its sitting Tuesday, theBoard of the National Trade Union Federation decided to put offthe question of resuming actions of protest — till the newgovernment has been formed.<\/p>\n

The Board gathered today to discuss the situation, as February10 is supposed to be the deadline of the exhaustivenegotiations the unions have been conducting with the Governmentconcerning ways of fulfilling the demands forwarded by theFederation during the January 18 through 22 mass-scaleprotesting.<\/p>\n

The negotiations have been suspended due to the governmentresignation. Heretofore, a joint [unions\/government] workinggroup has tackled several essential issues, such as, e.g.,revision of energy tariffs.<\/p>\n

At the talks’ initial stage, the government yielded to theunion’s insistence and agreed to revise the communal tariffcomputation technique, so that to bring the tariffs closer towhat energy the population really consumes. This certainlyimplies that the State is now supposed to compensate thedifference. According to some preliminary estimates, the’generosity’ is going to require an extra 400 million lei, inaddition to the 200 million lei of tariff compensationsenvisaged by the 1999 State Budget. But even the 200 million isyet only an expectation, not the reality.<\/p>\n

"We shall necessarily resume the talks as soon as the newgovernment comes to office.
