On Thursday, Moldova received from the Government of the Netherlands a $10 million grant intended to underpin the republic’s balance of payments. The Dutch grant will be used for co-financing the World Bank SAC-II arrangement.<\/p>\n

Minister of Finance Mihai Manoli said a part of the grant ($6.3 million) is subject to immediate conversion. According to a Decree signed by President Voronin last May, 52 million lei will be used to repay targeted compensations, and 27 million will be repaid in social allowances. <\/p>\n

"In fact, 79 million lei will be sent exclusively to the Social Fund. And, still, salary arrears to public sector employees are remaining uncovered. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to find means to repay at least one monthly salary to state servants", Mr. Manoli said, admitting that a certain part of the salary arrears will shift over to the next year. <\/p>\n

According to preliminary estimates, the 2001 Budget will be fulfilled by only 87 percent, and its revenues side is going to short- receive 450 million lei. <\/p>\n

Besides the Dutch grant in question, this year Moldova received a $5 million credit from the World Bank as an addition to the SAC-II arrangement.
