"Over 30 percent of the industry of the former Soviet Republic of Moldova was concentrated in this region." The region reached the highest level of the foreign economic activity in 2000, when the total among of export transactions accounted for 817.3 million dollars, which is three-fold higher than in Moldova if calculated per capita. <\/p>\n

Writers say that after Moldova joined the World Trade Organisation in 2001 and severed the customs procedures, Transnistria’s foreign trade "dropped short." The situation became more complicated after May 15, 2003, when the Moldova-Ukrainian protocol, recognizing only Chisinau’s waybills and customs documents, was enacted. <\/p>\n

Unlike Chisinau, the left border of the Dniestr river always preferred the state settlement methods, and only by the end of the 1990s the region began inclining towards the market process. <\/p>\n

According to writers, in 1997 and 2001, the Transnistrian region registered an economic growth of 42.3 percent and 11 percent, respectively, but the withdrawal of customs stamps had a dramatic impact and was qualified by the Transnistrian administration as "an economic blockade." In 2002, the region registered a reduction of the gross domestic product down to 250 million dollars, by 2.7 percent less than in 2001. The GDP per capita accounted for 392.3 dollars in 2002.
