The number of foreign tourists who arrive in Moldova for business purposes dropped by nearly one third in the first half of this year, down to 3,800 persons, according to data that the National Bureau for Statistics (BNS) released on Thursday, August 17. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, the number of foreigners who arrive in Moldova for leisure and entertainment has grown by 3.6 percent, up to 2,800 persons, while of those who come for treatment has risen by 4.6 percent, up to 251 persons. <\/p>\n

About 7,000 tourists visited Moldova in January-June 2006, by 20 percent fewer persons than last year. "Tourism agencies expect a growth of tourism in the second half of this year, on the eve of the Wine Festival. A tradition appears when foreign tourists schedule their visit to Moldova including for business purposes on autumn, in order to combine business with Moldovan autumn holidays," a representative of a travel agency stated to BASA. <\/p>\n

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism did not comment on the decline in the tourism sector yet. At the same time, a representative of the ministry stated to BASA that the tourism is expected to grow starting January 2007, when Moldova will annul the visas for citizens of the European Union, the United States, etc. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, experts say that the statistics reveal only the travel of tourists via tourism agencies and they do not cover those who travel alone, so that the real situation could be another. <\/p>\n

The number of Moldovans who leave for abroad for tourism purposes is growing. According to BNS, the number of Moldovan tourists who left for abroad rose by 29.1 percent in January-June 2006, up to 22,000 people. <\/p>\n

This trend is typical for last years. Experts say that tourism agencies raise larger profits from organising trips abroad than from attracting foreign tourists in Moldova.
