The National Bureau for Statistics (BNS) has announced a deflation of 0.4 percent for July 2006. The deflation phenomenon was due to lower prices of food products, especially of vegetables and potatoes. <\/p>\n

According to BNS, consumption prices of food products have dropped by 3.8 percent, while prices of manufactured goods have grown by 1.1 percent and tariffs of services for population have risen by 3.7 percent. <\/p>\n

Statisticians note that the deflation in July was due to the reduction of potato prices by 39.1 percent and of fresh vegetables by 18.8 percent. At the same time, prices of fresh fruits have grown by 9.3 percent, of eggs by 12.1 percent, of fowl, ewe’s cheese and buckwheat croups by 2.2 percent and 1.7 percent. <\/p>\n

Prices of fuels have grown by 2.3 percent, of drugs by 1.8 percent and of building materials by 1.3 percent. <\/p>\n

BNS notes that the natural gas delivery tariffs rose by 18.1 percent in July, of interurban motor transport by 14.5 percent, and drinkable water delivery by 4.9 percent. <\/p>\n

Ana Cucereavii, directorate chief in BNS, told BASA that food products cover 44.45 percent of the structure of consumption in Moldova, which is over two-fold more than in countries with developed economy. At the same time, manufactured goods cover 30.19 percent, while services only 25.4 percent of the consumer index, compared with 61 percent in countries with developed economies. <\/p>\n

The cumulated inflation rate for January-July 2006 was 7 percent. <\/p>\n

The government and the National Bank of Moldova forecast a 9-10 percent inflation rate for this year, but economic analysts estimate that the inflation will grow up to 12-13 percent, given the paces registered until now, while experts of the International Monetary Fund who visited Moldova in late July said that the inflation will be higher than forecasted by government and the economic growth will be lower, but ruled out a catastrophic decline. The considerable rise of the Russian gas tariffs up to 160 dollars per 1,000 cubic metres and the suspended wine exports represent a shock for Moldova’s economy, experts added.
