Official forecasts regarding a 3.6-percent growth of agricultural production for this year could fail after the agriculture registered an estimated advance of only 1.8 percent, up to 2.481 billion lei (about 190.8 million dollars) in the first half of this year. <\/p>\n

Data of the National Bureau for Statistics reveal that the livestock rose by 1.9 percent and the phytotechny grew by 0.7 percent in six months of this year. The rise was due to the growth of swine livestock, number of poultry, and enlargement of sugar beet, sunflower and soy fields. <\/p>\n

The cattle livestock has declined by 7 percent, down to 316,000 head, sheep and goat by 1 percent, down to 962,000 head. On the other hand, the number of swine has grown by 17 percent (514,000 head), while the number of poultry has risen by 13 percent (2.82 million). <\/p>\n

Experts say that important rises are not expected in the second half of this year. About 780,000 tons of wheat is expected this season, compared with nearly one million in 2005. <\/p>\n

Minister of Agriculture Anatol Gorodenco estimated in June that "the agriculture will grow" this year. "The overall production in agriculture will grow by 3.6 percent in 2006, including livestock sector by 7 percent, after the modest results registered last year," the minister said. <\/p>\n

Premier Vasile Tarlev has criticised the ministerial administration for "not taking enough actions to promote the agrarian policy of the state" and demanded the elaboration of an action plan to increase sales of food products on domestic market and exports. <\/p>\n

The overall agricultural production rose by only 1 percent in 2005, compared with 2004, and the production volume has seriously declined in some sectors. <\/p>\n
