Moldova reduced the sparkling wine production by 53 percent in the first half of this year after the Russian Federation has introduced the embargo on Moldovan alcohol drinks. <\/p>\n

Updated data of the National Bureau for Statistics (BNS) reveal that wineries made 132,200 decilitres of sparkling wines in January-June. Although the natural grape wine production was affected in a relatively smaller measure, the crisis has affected this segment of wine industry, too. Wineries made 803,000 decilitres of natural grape wines in the first half of this year, by 45 percent less than in the similar period of 2005. The cognac production has declined by 25 percent, down to 334,500 decilitres. <\/p>\n

The Russian Federation, the main market for Moldovan wineries, prohibited the importation of Moldovan wines on March 27, saying that they have a low quality. Although Russia introduced the interdictions more than four months ago, negotiations between sides have failed while reports on resumption of exports are controversial. <\/p>\n

Many experts fear about a repetition of the situation from May 2005, when Russia prohibited the importation of vegetal products from Moldova because Moldovan exporters violated the Russian and international norms on delivery of agricultural production. Russia did not resume the imports so far. <\/p>\n

The wine industry, which reported a production volume worth one billion lei (75 million dollars) in the first half of this year, represents 12 percent of the total industrial production. Data of the National Bureau for Statistics show that exports of alcohol and non-alcohol drinks dropped by 23 percent in the first five months, compared with the similar period of last year. <\/p>\n

Officials and experts avoid forecasts about an eventual date when the exports will be resumed. They hope that the exports will be resumed in a forthcoming perspective. <\/p>\n

Moldova was exporting about 80 percent (240-250 million dollars) of alcohol production to Russia.
