The Moldovan government has announced that it will cover 50 per cent of the increase in gas rates for those consumers who consume less than 30 cu.m. of gas per month. The government approved a bill to this effect on Monday, but it unveiled it only on Tuesday evening (18 July). <\/p>\n

According to the government press service, expenditures will be covered by the state budget. <\/p>\n

According to the Russian-Moldovan Moldova-gaz company, 262.4 thousand Moldovan citizens consume up to 30 cubic meters of gas per month and other 148 thousand consumer up to 15 cubic meters. <\/p>\n

At present, the gas rate for those consuming up to 30 cubic meters of gas a month is MDL 1.46 (+5% value added tax) per cubic meter. Those consuming more gas pay MDL 1.87 (+5% value added tax). <\/p>\n

Starting from July 1, Russia’s gas giant Gazprom supplies gas to Moldova for $160 per 1000 cubic meters up from $110. In this connection, gas rates are due to be recalculated until the end of the week and they are expected to increase by almost 50%. <\/p>\n

In the winter, the gas consumption increases considerably up to 300-1000 cubic meters a month per family living in a private house due to gas use for heating. <\/p>\n
