Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has met European Commission’s Commissioner for Agricultural and Rural Development Mariann Fischer Boel. The meeting was conducted within Voronin’s working visit to Brussels, MOLDPRES correspondent reports from Belgium’s capital city. <\/p>\n

The president informed the European official about the situation emerged after the Russian authorities had barred the imports of Moldovan wines. In this respect, Voronin asked the European Commission to reduce the tariffs for the Moldovan wines’ export to the European Union’s (EU) market. <\/p>\n

The European commissioner said the EU could approach the Moldovan wines’ issue in terms of decreasing export taxes, if the problem is considered within the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) General Assembly, which is scheduled for next September. <\/p>\n

Mariann Fischer Boel said the European Union’s citizens prefer wines from outside EU, and encouraged the Moldovan wine producers to extend exports to the European Community’s market. <\/p>\n

At the same time, President Voronin called on the EU, in the person of the commissioner for agriculture and rural development, to assist Moldova to strengthen rural capacities and develop the agricultural sector through international projects. Mariann Fischer Boel said the projects on lasting rural development which are implemented in the neighbouring country, Romania, could be implemented in Moldova too, by adjusting them to the country’s conditions. <\/p>\n

After the meeting, President Vladimir Voronin visited the Brussels-based Royal Museum of the Army and Military History, after which he is to go to the new headquarters of Moldova’s embassy under the EU and NATO. <\/p>\n
