\"\"About 200 trainloads and trucks with Moldovan wines that should arrive in the Russian Federation are blocked at the customs offices between Ukraine and Russia, after Moscow has restricted the imports from Moldova. <\/p>\n

The sanitary service of Russia, Rospotrebnadzor, has ordered the suspension of wine imports from Moldova and Georgia, starting March 27, saying that they contain too many pesticides and metals and harm consumers. <\/p>\n

"This is an unprecedented situation. It is not clear for the time being whether we will manage to carry out transactions with blocked wines or will have to turn back to country," Iurie Mudrea, spokesman for the MoldovaVin Agency, has stated to BASA. He said that an official delegation headed by MoldovaVin director Valeriu Mironescu left for Moscow on Tuesday morning to negotiate the unblocking of exports. <\/p>\n

The consumer protection service explains the decision to stop the imports through the fact that Moldovan wines have "a low quality and they endanger the Russian consumer." <\/p>\n

In reply, MoldovaVin said that the wines are certified by representation of the Russian service Rostest in Moldova and three local laboratories, which are accredited including by competent bodies of Moscow. MoldovaVin experts argue that Russian partners did not raise objections against quality of wines and this fact challenges doubts that the decision to suspend the imports has a political nature. <\/p>\n

The Russian newspaper Kommersant said Tuesday that the sanctions of Russia will affect both Moldovan producers, and Russian makers, as 50 percent of wines made in Russia are produced from Moldovan raw material. Kommersant quoted experts as saying that Moscow’s sanctions have a political nature. "We have been importing wines from Moldova for ten years and we had never had problems related to their quality," said the chairman of the Russian company Vinny Mir Holding, a leading importer of Moldovan wines. <\/p>\n

Russia absorbs more than 85 percent of Moldovan wine exports evaluated at over 250 million dollars a year.
