\"\"The chief sanitary doctor of Russia, Genadie Onishchenko, has asked the federal authorities to "apply legislative tools in order to stop the wine imports from Moldova and Georgia because they have a low quality," according to Russian press reports. In turn, Chisinau says that the interdiction has a political nature. <\/p>\n

"The low quality of Moldovan wines and raw material endangers the health of Russian consumer and that is why we demand the suspension of imports," reads a statement by Onishchenko delivered to the Federal Customs Service and regional representations of the consumer protection services. <\/p>\n

According to Russian reports, a survey conducted on the Moscow market revealed that more than 60 percent of wines imported from Moldova or Georgia unfit the Russian sanitary norms. The relevant authorities claim that wine makers from the two states use pesticides to grow vine. <\/p>\n

At the same time, Chisinau says that the accusations of Moscow are groundless. "The quality of Moldovan wines is recognised at world level and the extension of exports to 40 states of the world confirms this fact," Iurie Mudrea, spokesman for the MoldovaVin Agency, stated to BASA. <\/p>\n

He noted that the compromising of image of Moldovan wine production would mean the compromising of the Russian wine making industry because about 70 percent of wines made in Russia are made from raw material imported from Moldova. <\/p>\n

At present, the wine deliveries to the Russian market are on the continued decline because the old excise stamps expire on April 1. Moldovan wine makers exported wines worth 3.7 million lei (285,000 dollars) to Russia on March 24 and the exports dropped down to 620,000 lei the next two days. <\/p>\n

Acorex Wine Holding, Imperial-Vin, Vismos si Combinatele Milestii Mici and Cricova are among wine companies which stopped exporting wines to Russia. <\/p>\n

Russia absorbs more than 85 percent of Moldovan wine exports. The wine exports dropped by 4 percent in January down to 19.18 million dollars due to the uncertainty related to deliveries to Russia. The reduction came after a constant rise in the past years.
