\nAccording to the Infotag news agency, the government of the Russian Federation has rejected a proposal to extend validity of old-type excise stamps used for wine bottles imported from to Russia. The request asked to extend the deadline from April 1 to July 1, 2006. As result, it put wine imports, especially those from Moldova, which count for more than half of all wine imports of Russia, in a rather difficult situation. Thus, on April 1 a Russian de facto-ban or embargo is going to take place that will have a huge impact on the Moldovan wine industry. Moldova sells to Russia up to 85% of its wine. <\/p>\n

Last year Moldova used up to 40 percent of available Russian stamps – 240 million and, by now, over 90% of wine products ready for shipment to Russia have old-type stamps. <\/p>\n

On 14 March 2006, the Russian Railway Co. forwarded a telegram to the customs units serving Moldovan destination introducing a ten-day ban on shipments from Moldova. <\/p>\n

In addition to recent unfounded charges against Moldovan and Georgian wines that they pose health hazards to Russian consumers, this excise stamp restriction is another tool used by the Russian government against Moldova and Georgia for their pro-Western orientation. Moldova with the support of Ukraine, the United States, and the European Union is trying to integrate its breakaway Transnistrian region, thus taking it from the Russian control.
