Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has received the head of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Mission for Moldova, Thomas Richardson, according to the presidential press service. <\/p>\n

The discussions were focused on all the spectrum of Moldova’s collaboration with IMF, especially holding negotiations on a new financing programme for 2006-2009. Vladimir Voronin and Thomas Richardson described the new draft programme with IMF as well-structured, with strategic content, focused on the macro-level results. <\/p>\n

Thomas Richardson was optimistic both about the forthcoming decision the IMF Board of Directors is to take next May on signing an agreement with Moldova, and the prospects of the relations with Moldova. The IMF official highly appreciated the quality of the governmental team, which is appointed to negotiate the new agreement with IMF. He stressed the constructive and interested character of the collaboration, as well as the presence of a pronounced political will to re-launch the cooperation with this structure at a more productive level. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin emphasised the political importance to sign a new agreement with IMF. For Moldova, the cooperation with the international financial structure represents a key-element, while evaluating the progress made in carrying out reforms. This assessment will incontestably influence the relations with the European Union (EU), the World Bank, the Paris Club, other international structures, the president said. Thomas Richardson backed this ascertained fact, stressing that the essence of the IMF’s activity consists in supporting the national programmes and policies routed to the economic and social development. In case of Moldova, these programmes deal with the implementation of the European standards and getting closer to EU. <\/p>\n
