Under the January 2006 agreement, Moldova pays 110 dollars per 1,000 cubic metres of gas to Gazprom, by over 37 percent more than in 1996-2005. The Russian concern said in late 2005 that it will sell gas to Chisinau in exchange for 160 dollars per 1,000 cubic metres, but it finally accepted a 110-dollar \"\"price. <\/p>\n

Negotiations that took place in Moscow in late February failed. MoldovaGaz failed to sign a new natural gas supply contract with Gazprom because the sides did not agree on mechanisms of formation of gas prices. Valeriu Lazar, minister of economy and trade, has recently said that "the Russian side wants a higher price, whereas Moldova wants to pay less." <\/p>\n
