Moldova’s wine exports dropped by 4 percent in January 2006, down to 19.18 million dollars due to some uncertainties related to supplies to Russia, the main sale market for Moldovan wines. <\/p>\n

Data of the Agri-Industrial Agency MoldovaVin show that Moldova exported bottled wines worth 13 million dollars, sparkling and frothy wines worth 121,000 dollars, cognac worth 2,710 dollars, raw wine and wines in bulk worth 3.15 million dollars in January 2006. <\/p>\n

"A value but not a quantity dynamic was registered," Gheorghe Cozub, chairman of the Union of Wine Exporters, has said. "Perhaps many firms have started exporting wines with a strength of maximum 9 percent, which may be exported without excise stamps and are cheaper, because they lack excise stamps," Cozub noted. <\/p>\n

He criticised the model of maintenance of positions on the Russian market, saying that the wine exports with a low alcohol degree "will compromise the image of Moldovan wine making sector." <\/p>\n

Moscow has stopped issuing old-type excise stamps because it introduces a new excise system. Some companies from Moldova have warned that they do not hold excise stamps and, therefore, they cannot export. As for example, the wineries Cricova and Vismos have stopped the exports to Russia because they lack excise stamps. <\/p>\n

Russia is the main importer of Moldovan wines. Moldova exported wines worth 313 million dollars in 2005, of which Russia absorbed 85 percent.
