The rise in the price of natural gas supplied to the Moldovan consumers will not have a critical impact on the national economy, Minister of Economy and Commerce Valeriu Lazar considers. <\/p>\n

The official said that currently, the gas consumption in Moldova constitutes only 2% of the Gross Domestic Product. The enterprises generating electric power and thermal energy consume the largest part of natural gas. <\/p>\n

Other large enterprises that use natural gas in production, including Rezina Cement Factory and Chisinau Glass Factory, have profitable reserves that permit to moderate the increase in the price of their products, Lazar told after Wednesday’s meeting of the Government. <\/p>\n

The Minister of Economy and Commerce did not rule out the possibility that a number of economic agents will try to speculate on the rise in gas price. Lazar said that the state cannot influence price creation through the administrative method. The prices must be determined by the market, while the competition can be an important factor in limiting the speculative actions. <\/p>\n

Valeriu Lazar stressed that the rise in prices could partly influence the economic growth, but the Government will take steps to diminish the negative impact. He said that the mechanism for allocating compensations to socially-vulnerable sections will be finalized soon. <\/p>\n
