The Government has extended the deadline for application for deposit indexation in 2006. <\/p>\n

The people born before 1939 inclusively must go to the branches of the Savings Bank JSC by May 1 and submit applications for being included in the lists for indexation this year. <\/p>\n

According to Minister of Finance Mihai Pop, 33,900 beneficiaries of indexations submitted applications in the period of September 9 – December 30, 2005. Some 31.4 million lei must be given back to them. Indexations to the sum of 2.3 million lei will be paid in 2006 to the depositors that for different reasons did not receive the money in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Mihai Pop specified that the budget law for 2006 provides for 65 million lei for deposit indexations. <\/p>\n

The indexation of population’s deposits is carried out under the Law on Indexation of Money Deposited in the Savings Bank, adopted on 12 December 2002. It is performed in the proportion of 1 ruble – 1 leu for the first thousand rubles of the cumulative balance on all the accounts held by a depositor and in proportion of 2.5 rubles – 1 leu for the rest of the balance.
